Jeannie Seely - Written In Song Album Review

Jeannie Seely – Written In Song

By Christian F. Scalise

GRAMMY award-winning country music star and beloved member of the Grand Ole Opry, Jeannie Seely has returned to music with a brand-new album ‘Written In Song’, her first album since 2011’s ‘Vintage Country’. Long overdue but well worth the wait, Miss Country Soul lends her signature style and sexy voice to some of the greatest songs in the history of country music either written or co-written by the artist herself.

In a time when many country music fans are desperately craving traditional country music, Seely wholeheartedly fulfills the request by adding her magic touch to iconic songs such as Merle Haggard’s “Life of a Rodeo Cowboy,” Dottie West’s “He’s All I Need,” Jack Greene’s “You Don’t Need Me,” Ray Price’s “Enough To Lie,” and Ernest Tubb’s “Sometimes I Do.” It’s an absolute treat being able to hear Jeannie sing the very songs that became smash hits for her fellow friends and peers in the business.

Jeannie declares that ‘Written In Song’ is very special to her as it represents many of the stories of her life, written in song. She’s honest enough to admit that not all those mistakes are her own doing, but at the expense of a little eavesdropping on complete stranger’s conversations with their friends. Seely jokingly claims that it took her so long to record these songs because she had to wait for all the people she wrote about to forget what she wrote them about! If one thing is clear about Seely’s album, that would be her sense of great pride in being able to have some of her most treasured songs recorded by her friends and heroes in country music.

There are a few surprises thrown into the album as well including vocal appearances by Opry legend Jan Howard and Jessi Colter on “We’re Still Hangin’ In There Ain’t We Jessi,” and country music favorites Connie Smith and Marty Stuart on “Senses.” In closing, we cannot forget to acknowledge the cast of incredibly talented musicians on this album – Doug Grieves – Leader and Lead Guitar, Tommy White – Steel Guitar, Jimmy Capps – Rhythm Guitar, Marty Stuart – Rhythm Guitars, Danny Davis – Bass, Tim Atwood – Piano, Eddie Bayers – Drums, Dennis Wage – Keyboards, and Chip Davis – Vocals.

Sincere thanks to Jeannie Seely for the opportunity to review this record! We would also like to thank Jeannie for recording this authentic country album for fans alike - We are truly blessed to have a long-standing member of the Grand Ole Opry and country music family still recording and performing quality country music!
