Rhonda Vincent "Only Me" Album Review

Rhonda Vincent “Only Me” Upper Management Music Label

By Christian F. Scalise

The reigning Queen of Bluegrass, five-time Grammy nominee Rhonda Vincent has struck gold yet again on her latest 2-Disc combination album, “Only Me;” a collection of original tunes and revered classics performed both in Bluegrass and Country.

This unique approach to the recording process offers the listener a rare opportunity to hear one of music’s purest voices (Vincent) taking on some of the greatest songs of all time; Connie Smith’s “Once A Day,” George Jones’s “When The Grass Grows Over Me,” Emmylou Harris’s number one hit “Beneath Still Waters,” and even a minor revision to Opry Legend Bill Anderson’s “Bright Lights & Country Music” from a females perspective.

Being a big fan of Jack Greene and knowing Vincent also feels the same way toward the music legend, I was extremely pleased to hear her cover one of his greatest hits, “I Need Somebody Bad Tonight.” This particular song was transformed into a heartfelt Bluegrass number with chilling vocals by Vincent and melodic accompaniment by the banjo and fiddles. For any true country music fan, this track will immediately become one of your favorites!

Longtime fans will also be pleased to hear an updated country/western swing re-recorded version of Vincent’s signature hit “Drivin’ Nails.” One of the most prominent and memorable changes to the new recording are the sweet sounds of the pedal steel and breathtaking bass section. Vincent displays a bluesy and soulful side on the song while sprinkling just a little signature spunk into the mix.

Another highlight worth mentioning is a duet with Willie Nelson on the albums title track, “Only Me” that is sure to become an instant classic.  The song starts out Bluegrass but mid song transgresses to a more southwest Texas sound complete with Willie’s legendary guitar picking and dueling fiddles.

There’s no question that Rhonda Vincent is one of the most talented, hard-working and authentic artists in the music business. The question of whether Vincent sounds Bluegrass or Country is irrelevant because she sounds nothing more than a dedicated vocalist and phenomenal musician.

In closing, receiving a blessing from Dolly Parton on your brand new album can’t be all that bad either!

“When Rhonda Vincent opens her mouth, it’s great… whether she’s singing country or bluegrass. This collection of songs on “Only Me” is incredible. God gave Rhonda an unbelievable voice and I am so thankful that we get to enjoy it. I love her like a sister and enjoy her music as her biggest fan.” –Dolly Parton
